Class Portfolio

Hi. Welcome to the home page for my Fall 2004 section of English 101.  The course focuses on the study of the discourse communities that students are insiders to, among their friends and families, workplaces, and at UMB, using my freshman writing text, Exploring Literacy, and assignments are drawn from that text. It involves students in primary research into those communities, and secondary research into issues or questions that arise from that primary research.  The website has allowed students to share their research and respond to the work their classmates are doing and to identify questions of interest that arise across a number of their individual studies. I have responded to one of those questions with my own "personal research essay" that draws on both their primary data and on secondary research, providing a model for integrating both while attempting to address a real issue identified by the class.  The students' work and my own essay in response can be found under student profiles and in the class portfolio.
