ESL Program

Freshman writing sections with the designation 101e and 102e offer focused composition instruction to meet the specific needs of regularly admitted freshman students from other language backgrounds who have recently acquired English.  The ESL program for matriculated students is directed by Professor Vivian Zamel. (Wheatley 6-30).

In addition, UMB offers a University Preparation Program combining intensive study of English with preparation for college study.  Upon completion of this program, candidates seeking admission to UMass Boston undergraduate programs may submit their work in University Preparation in lieu of a TOEFL exam score.  More information about the University Preparation program can be found at
