The Freshman English at UMB website began to take shape in the summer of 2003. Initially, the goal was to create an interactive class website that would enhance our teaching of composition. In the years that have followed, the design of the site has changed immensely and has grown into the central e-space for the Freshman English Program. Dozens of faculty members and hundreds of students visit and utilize the site each semester, helping to build the kind of writing and thinking communities the program values. Although much of the design work was completed by the individuals mentioned above, the content found here is the work of several faculty members working in concert to shape a site that is representative of the common goals of the program. As a work-in-progress, we continue to develop and assess its role in the teaching of writing and the ways in which it can foster community in our classrooms and beyond.
