Assignments for Unit 1, Week 2

Unit 1 is titled, “Writing from Experience.”  In this unit, you will craft a memoir, or autobiographical story.  This story from your life can be about anything you want it to be about.  The important thing to remember is to be careful with your choice.  If you do not feel comfortable sharing the experience with your classmates or with me, then you may want to select something else.

For Monday, September 13

Read pages 1 – 8 in Writing Voyage.  Think about the 8 points Tyner presents on pages 2 – 3.  Do any of these points surprise you?  With what do you agree?  Disagree?  You will notice that pages 5 – 8 list a number of activities that we will engage in.  In order to prepare for these activities, do some prewriting on your potential topics using the “Topic Selection” guide on pages 4 – 5.  For this exercise, you do not have to worry about grammar or “being correct.”  Notice in the student sample how the student jumps from one idea to the next.  Your prewriting should be a free flow of ideas.  Bring to copies of your prewriting to class, one for you to share with your group and one to hand in to me.

For Wednesday, September 15

If we don’t get to everything planned for Monday, we’ll pick it up here.  However, you should read Maxine Hong Kingston’s “The Woman Warrior” for today’s class, and you should to in your response to Prewriting Activity 1.4 on page 8.  Again, bring in two copies, one for me and one to share with your group.  The remainder of the class will focus on a discussion of Kingston’s essay.

For Friday, September 17

Today you will turn in your first journal entry based on the prompt on pages 10 – 11.  Make sure you have read the section on first drafts on pages 11 – 13.  We will discuss the narrative elements presented on page 11 and discuss the student draft presented in the textbook.

Weekend Homework

Write a first draft of your memoir essay.  There will be no reading assignment for the weekend.  On Monday I will begin with a lecture on revision and then open the class up for discussion of this topic.
